And guess what? In Python, those words are called strings. Yep, just like a string of beads, but instead of beads, we have letters, numbers, spaces, and symbols—all lined up nicely in quotes.


🪄 1. What is a String?

A string is simply text—like your name, a sentence, or even a whole story. In Python, strings are written inside quotes.

"Roger"
'Hello, friend!'

Either single quotes ' ' or double quotes " " will do the magic!


🏷️ 2. Naming Your String

Let’s say you want to save Roger’s name in your magic notebook (that’s your Python program):

name = "Roger"

Now anytime you type name, Python will remember: “Ah! That’s Roger!”

Roger loves his title. So you can add more info like this:

title = " is a good dog"
sentence = name + title
print(sentence)

Result:

Roger is a good dog

That + is like glue—it sticks strings together!

Strings come with cool built-in tricks called methods.

If name = "Roger":

print(name.lower())  # roger
print(name.upper())  # ROGER
print(len(name))     # 5 (number of letters)
print("ger" in name) # True

Even more magical:

print(name.replace("Roger", "Bingo"))  # Bingo

Remember: these methods don’t change the original name, they just give you a modified copy.


🎭 7. Escaping Quotes (The Magic Wand)

What if Roger wants to say:

'Roger said, "I love bones!"'

Or even sneak in some trickier stuff?

quote = "Roger said, \"I'm hungry!\""

That \ (backslash) tells Python: “Don’t end the string here! Just include the quote.”

Extra tricks:

  • \n adds a new line
  • \t adds a tab (like pressing Tab on a keyboard)

🧮 8. Picking Out Letters (Indexing)

Imagine Roger’s name: “Roger”

Each letter has a secret number:

 R  o  g  e  r
[0][1][2][3][4]
print(name[0])   # R
print(name[1])   # o
print(name[-1])  # r (last letter)

Want just a piece of his name?

print(name[0:2])  # Ro
print(name[2:])   # ger

That’s called slicing—like cutting a slice of cake!
